Grand Rapids, Michigan | Small City with Big Flavors.

Updated: Nov 21, 2019

Halloween weekend I took a little getaway to the wonderful state of Michigan. I always love getting to travel to new cities to see how they have grown their culture to cater to the vegan lifestyle.

Brick Road Pizza Co was a surprising find. Their huge menu, full of vegan and non-vegan options, was filled with extremely creative dishes. Their lunch buffet was even all vegan besides one or two dishes. We decided to skip the buffet and ordered up a pizza and a Vegan Philly Cheese Steak (yes, you read that right).

The pizza pictured below was easily one of the best vegan pizza's I've tried. It's called The Tempest and was a combination of vegan Alfredo, cheddar, tempeh sausage, spinach, red pepper, caramelized onions, and pesto.

There are so many foods that I had no interest in trying before I made the switch to vegan, and one of those foods was Philly Cheese Steak. It's been almost funny to me how many foods I have ventured out and tried as a vegan, and none of them have disappointed me. This delicacy at Brick Road is made with seasoned and marinated tempeh, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and topped with vegan cheese sauce on a flat bread. Everything on their menu can be made gluten free as well.

A beautiful thing about breweries is their food is almost always fresh, which makes adding vegan options to their menu a simple task. And a beautiful thing about Michigan, is they have many breweries. The one I was most impressed with was Atwater Brewery. In the video below, you can check out the breaded buffalo cauliflower wings we enjoyed as an appetizer. These wings were so good, our group of 7 had four orders of these around the table. Don't forget to ask for their homemade vegan ranch. As an entree, we ordered the ® Beyond Sausage® topped with vegan nacho cheese and vegan coleslaw on a pretzel bun. I was blown away by how flavorful this dish is.

There were a ton of other vegan joints we weren't able to stop by offering everything from breakfast dishes to vegan bbq and more! If you are looking for a fun city getaway with some amazing grub, I would highly recommend Grand Rapids.
